about

"Um Nome Num Barco" was written in my hometown, Rio de Janeiro, in 1992. It is based upon the harmonic structure of a standard from the Great American Songbook entitled "How High the Moon." Similar to what Charlie Parker used on "Ornithology" and John Coltrane used on "Satélite." What makes this composition interesting is the fusion of this standard with the melodic influences from two great Brazilian Composers: Dorival Caymmi and Edu Lobo. A repeated theme in the song uses a melody derived from "João Valentão," a Brazilian Songbook Classic that was written by Dorival Caymmi in 1953, and "Coração Noturno," written by Edu Lobo and Cacaso in the seventies.

The song was recorded in São Paulo, with Latin Grammy-award-winning acoustic guitarist Toninho Horta; Jorge Helder: acoustic bass; Hélio Alves: acoustic piano; Marcos da Costa: drums; and Márcio Resende: tenor Saxophone. "Um Nome Num Barco" is part of my album "Elegant Fish" that will be released next year, produced by Brazilian guitar player Sandro Albert. I would also like to thank my lifelong friend and co-author of this song, Claudio Nucci, for his extraordinary voice on this song. The other co-autor of this song is the legendary lyric songwriter Paulo Cesar Pinheiro.
